DJI Innovation Persists Despite Police Drone Switch

As a drone enthusiast, I’m constantly impressed by DJI’s relentless push for better tech—from obstacle avoidance to crystal-clear cameras. Their drones remain the gold standard for creators who need reliability and cutting-edge features. Yet, a recent move by Redmond, Oregon, highlights how institutional purchases sometimes shift away from innovation leaders.

The Redmond Police Department approved a $410,762 deal with Axon to buy six Skydio drones on a five-year financed contract, replacing their DJI fleet. The city council signed off on June 23, with the department calling its old DJI drones obsolete. While this sounds like a blow to DJI, it’s more about procurement trends than technological shortcomings.

For creators, DJI’s ecosystem is still unmatched. Their continuous updates—like improved flight stability and smarter battery management—ensure that even older models remain competitive. The police switch underscores how geopolitics and financing options can drive institutional choices, not necessarily performance.

Skydio brings autonomous features, but DJI’s camera quality and battery life keep them ahead for aerial photography and videography. For content creators, DJI’s innovation pipeline shows no signs of slowing, with each iteration refining what’s possible in the air.

This deal doesn’t change my view: DJI remains the go-to for drone enthusiasts. Their commitment to advancing drone tech ensures they’ll continue dominating the creator space, regardless of institutional shifts like Redmond’s. Innovation speaks louder than any single contract.
