GoPro founder Nicholas Woodman has purchased $20 million in company stock, a move framed as an effort to stabilize the business during another rough patch. The investment comes from DIY Photography, which reported the transaction on July 14, 2026, as a sign that Woodman is putting his own money on the line to keep GoPro afloat. While the gesture signals confidence from the top, many creators remain unconvinced—especially those who’ve lost footage due to repeated overheating failures.

As a creator who’s relied on action cameras for years, I’ve personally experienced GoPro shutting down mid-shoot in hot conditions, losing valuable footage that couldn’t be recovered. It’s not an isolated incident—overheating has been a known issue across multiple GoPro generations, particularly during extended 4K recording or in warm environments. Despite firmware updates and marketing promises, the problem persists in real-world use, making the cameras unreliable for anything beyond casual, short clips.

Because of this, I won’t trust new GoPro hardware unless it’s given to me for free—and even then, I’d only use it for throwaway B-roll, never for important shots where failure isn’t an option. The risk of losing footage due to thermal shutdown is too high, and GoPro hasn’t done enough to prove they’ve fixed the core issue. When your livelihood depends on capturing the moment, you can’t afford a camera that taps out when it gets warm.

Instead, I’ve switched to DJI and Insta360 for my primary action cam needs. Both brands have delivered more consistent thermal performance in my testing, with better heat management and fewer unexpected shutdowns. While no device is perfect, the reliability gap is clear—and until GoPro addresses overheating at the hardware level, I can’t recommend their products to fellow creators who demand dependability. Woodman’s stock buy may help the balance sheet, but it won’t fix a overheating sensor.
