YouTube to Favor Original Content in Shorts Recommendations, Reports Say

0

YouTube reportedly announced on October 2, 2026, that its Shorts recommendations will give greater priority to original contributions while reducing distribution for videos re-uploaded from other creators without meaningful additions. The reported shift concerns what the platform recommends, not a blanket ban on clipping or re-uploads.

According to the reporting, the distinction turns on what the uploader adds. Original commentary, distinctive editing, storytelling and a creator’s own perspective count as original contributions. Minor technical edits, template-based changes or cosmetic tweaks alone do not. A re-upload with genuine commentary or a new narrative fits the examples of added value; a straight repost with a new caption does not.

The move extends a pattern YouTube has been building all year. In July 2026 the company clarified its inauthentic content monetization guidelines with named categories for templated and repetitive content, and the Partner Program overhaul announced in August raised the bar for Shorts revenue eligibility. Recommendation priority for originality is the discovery-side companion to those monetization-side changes: even content that stays monetized can lose reach if the system judges it derivative.

For clip channels, commentary channels and anyone repurposing third-party footage, the practical response is to make the contribution unmistakable. Open with an original thesis rather than the clip itself, add analysis the viewer could not get from the source, and develop a recognizable editing voice. Channels that already do this have little to change; channels built on volume reposts face a choice between adding real editorial value or watching their distribution thin out.
