On July 16, 2026, YouTube published clarified guidance for the Partner Program spelling out exactly what counts as inauthentic content, the policy that replaced the old repetitious content rules. According to coverage from TechCrunch and Tubefilter, the update is a clarification and reorganization of existing rules rather than a brand-new policy, designed to make demonetization decisions predictable instead of mysterious.
The guidance names three categories that will not be monetized. First, generic or repetitive content: videos that look templated or feel interchangeable across a channel, such as mass-produced slideshows with minimal variation or the same script structure re-rendered with different nouns. AI makes this cheap to produce at scale, which is why YouTube drew the line there. Second, unsatisfying or off-putting content: videos built on emotionally manipulative formulas or shock value with no narrative payoff. YouTube’s trust and safety lead Matt Halprin gave the concrete example of staged clips showing animals placed in danger and then rescued. Third, AI personas advising on sensitive topics: content presenting an AI-generated character as a human expert giving advice on health, finance, legal issues or politics, such as AI doctors recommending remedies.
The timeline matters. YouTube renamed repetitious content to inauthentic content in July 2025, ran its first major enforcement wave in January 2026 against mass-produced and AI-slop channels, and published this clarification in July 2026. The August Partner Program overhaul then raised entry thresholds on top of the content rules.
The takeaway is to audit the catalog against the three categories honestly. Watch the last ten uploads back to back: if they blur together, the channel is in the first category’s danger zone. Add original perspective, on-camera presence or genuine reporting that a template cannot replicate, and keep AI personas far away from sensitive advice topics.
