Valve has rolled out a new feature on Steam called "achievement sets," allowing developers to group achievements into distinct categories for base games and their downloadable content. This update aims to improve how players track progress across expansive titles with multiple expansions. According to Valve, the core gameplay remains unchanged—achievements are still unlocked by playing the game as usual—but the presentation now supports clearer segmentation.
For content creators, this change offers a more structured way to showcase completion milestones in long-running games or franchises with frequent DLC drops. Instead of a single, potentially overwhelming list, achievement sets enable developers to highlight progress per content drop, making it easier for audiences to follow along in videos, streams, or guides.
The feature is particularly beneficial for live service games and narrative-driven titles that release story expansions over time. By separating achievements into logical sets, creators can better contextualize accomplishments, such as distinguishing between base game completion and DLC-specific challenges.
Valve notes that developers must opt into the system and define their own achievement sets through Steamworks. There is no indication yet of retroactive application to older titles, but new and upcoming games can implement the feature at launch. The update reflects Steam’s ongoing effort to enhance user experience and developer tools in response to evolving game distribution models.
As achievement hunting remains a popular engagement driver in gaming communities, this update provides creators with a cleaner, more intuitive framework to document and discuss player progress across complex game ecosystems.
