A Nigerian activist has filed a formal petition with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) calling for an investigation into Meta Platforms Inc. and Meta Platforms Ireland Limited over the lockdown of a verified and monetized Facebook account. The account, associated with activist Larry, reportedly has a significant following and generates income through Facebook’s monetization features. The petition alleges that Meta’s restriction of the account was unjustified and lacked transparent communication or due process.

The activist argues that the action undermines the rights of digital creators who rely on verified status and monetization tools to sustain their livelihoods. By seeking regulatory intervention, the petition highlights growing concerns about platform accountability, especially regarding how tech giants manage creator accounts without clear recourse. The FCCPC, tasked with protecting consumer and business rights in Nigeria, is being urged to assess whether Meta’s actions violate fair trading practices or consumer protection laws.

This case underscores the increasing tension between content creators and social media platforms over control, transparency, and fairness in account management. For creators, verified status and access to monetization are not just symbols of credibility but essential components of their business models. Any arbitrary restriction can disrupt income streams and audience engagement.

As of now, Meta has not publicly responded to the petition. The outcome of the FCCPC’s review could set a precedent for how digital platforms are held accountable in Nigeria, particularly concerning the treatment of verified, revenue-generating accounts. Creators across Africa may watch closely, as the decision could influence future platform policies and creator protections in the region.
