Why I Stopped Trusting GoPro After Overheating Ruined My Shots

As a content creator who relies on action cameras for outdoor shoots, I’ve lost count of how many times my GoPro has shut down mid-recording due to overheating. It’s not a rare fluke—it’s a pattern. Whether filming in direct sunlight or pushing 4K at high frame rates, the camera overheats, shuts off, and takes precious footage with it. I’ve tried firmware updates, external cooling, and shorter clips—nothing reliably prevents it.

GoPro’s overheating issues are well-documented in real-world use, yet the company continues to market these devices as rugged, all-day solutions. For me, the trust is broken. I no longer recommend GoPro products to fellow creators. The risk of losing irreplaceable shots isn’t worth it, especially when deadlines and client work are on the line.

The only scenario where I’d even consider trying new GoPro hardware is if they sent it to me for free—and even then, I wouldn’t use it for anything important. I’d treat it as a backup at best, knowing its limits. There are better options now. DJI’s Osmo Action series and Insta360’s lineup offer stronger thermal management, more reliable performance, and features that actually hold up under pressure.

Until GoPro fixes this fundamental flaw—and proves it with consistent, real-world results—I’m sticking with brands that don’t make me fear my gear will fail when it matters most. Creators deserve better than guesswork. We need tools that work, not just hype.
