Sony Semiconductor Solutions has unveiled the LYTIA 720, a 50-megapixel image sensor designed for smartphone main cameras. Announced on October 28, 2026, the sensor targets mid-range and upper mid-range devices, bringing performance typically found in higher-tier models to a broader market. The LYTIA 720 features a 1/1.56-inch format, offering a balance between size and capability for mobile imaging.

The sensor supports 4K video recording at 60 frames per second with HDR, enabling smooth, high-quality footage suitable for content creators. With a claimed 100 dB dynamic range, it aims to preserve detail in both shadows and highlights, improving performance in challenging lighting conditions. This level of dynamic range is notable for a sensor in this class and aligns with Sony’s reputation for strong low-light and high-contrast imaging.

While not positioned as a flagship chip, the LYTIA 720 incorporates technology derived from Sony’s premium LYTIA series, including advancements in autofocus responsiveness and sensor efficiency. These enhancements help deliver faster focus acquisition and more consistent subject tracking, benefits that extend to both still photography and video capture.

By scaling down professional-grade imaging technologies to a more accessible format, Sony aims to empower smartphone manufacturers to offer competitive camera systems without the cost of top-tier components. The LYTIA 720 reflects Sony’s ongoing strategy to innovate across sensor tiers, supporting creators who rely on mobile devices for content production. Its introduction signals continued progress in bridging the gap between dedicated cameras and smartphone imaging capabilities.
