Solid-state batteries, long touted as the next breakthrough in energy storage, remain out of reach for widespread use in 2026, according to The Verge’s The Stepback newsletter. Despite years of hype and investment, challenges in manufacturing, cost, and durability continue to delay their commercial rollout. For creators who rely on portable power for cameras, drones, and mobile studios, this means sticking with current lithium-ion solutions for now.

However, the newsletter highlights a promising middle ground: semi-solid or gel-based batteries. These hybrid designs use a gel electrolyte instead of liquid or pure solid materials, offering improved safety and stability over traditional lithium-ion cells while being easier to produce than full solid-state versions. Gel batteries could bridge the performance gap without requiring a complete overhaul of existing supply chains.

For content creators, this development is significant. Gel-based batteries may soon appear in high-end gimbals, portable monitors, and outdoor power stations, delivering longer runtimes and faster charging without the fire risks associated with damaged lithium-ion packs. While not a revolution, this incremental advance could meaningfully improve workflow reliability, especially for field creators working in remote or rugged environments.

The Stepback notes that while solid-state tech remains years away from mass adoption, gel batteries are already entering pilot production and could reach creator-focused devices by late 2026. This makes them a near-term option worth watching—offering tangible benefits without the uncertainty of unproven technology. Creators should monitor announcements from battery suppliers and gear manufacturers integrating these advances into next-gen power solutions.
