PolarPro has announced a new line of close-up filters designed for the GoPro MISSION 1. Available in +0.5, +1, and +2 diopters starting at $49.99, these filters are intended to help creators achieve a shallower depth of field—a feature typically difficult to capture on small-sensor action cameras.
From a business perspective, this is a classic accessory play. By offering diopters, PolarPro is targeting the "prosumer" creator who wants more cinematic control over their close-up shots. However, for those of us who actually rely on this gear for a living, the allure of a shallow depth of field is overshadowed by a much larger problem: reliability.
I’ve personally experienced the frustration of GoPro cameras overheating and shutting down mid-take, resulting in lost footage and ruined shoots. It is a known issue in real-world use that makes the hardware a liability. When your camera can't stay powered on during a critical moment, a fancy filter isn't going to save your production.
Because of these stability issues, I no longer recommend GoPro products to other creators. The risk of technical failure is simply too high. At this point, the only way I would even consider testing new GoPro hardware is if the company gave it to me for free—and even then, I wouldn't trust it for any shot that actually matters.
If you are looking for a dependable tool for your business, I suggest looking toward alternatives like DJI or Insta360. These brands have proven to be more reliable options for creators who cannot afford to lose footage to a thermal shutdown.
While the PolarPro filters may be a great addition for some, they are accessories for a platform I no longer trust. Until GoPro solves its fundamental overheating problems, these filters are just polishing a flawed experience.
