As a content creator who relies on dependable gear, I’ve lost too many shoots to GoPro’s recurring overheating issues. Multiple times, my camera has shut down mid-action—whether filming mountain biking trails or beachside timelapses—forcing me to miss critical moments. These weren’t isolated incidents; they happened across different models and environments, always at the worst possible time.

Even now, seeing GoPro’s MISSION 1 PRO ILS 8K cinema camera honored as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026 feels tone-deaf. While the recognition highlights innovation on paper, it doesn’t erase the real-world reliability problems creators like me have faced for years. A $700 interchangeable-lens system means little if the core hardware can’t handle sustained use without thermal throttling or shutdowns.

GoPro has acknowledged overheating concerns in user forums and support pages, but firmware tweaks and usage tips haven’t fixed the underlying design limitations. I’ve tried everything—external cooling, reduced resolution, shorter clips—but the pattern remains: push the camera hard, and it fails when you need it most. That’s not acceptable for professional work where every second counts.

The ONLY scenario where I’d consider testing new GoPro hardware is if they sent it to me free of charge—and even then, I’d never use it for paid clients or irreplaceable footage. Trust isn’t rebuilt through awards; it’s earned through consistency, and GoPro has repeatedly let me down.

Instead, I’ve shifted my workflow to DJI and Insta360 solutions. Their action and 360 cameras deliver comparable image quality without the constant anxiety of sudden shutdowns. For creators who value reliability as much as resolution, those brands now offer a safer, more trustworthy path forward. Until GoPro proves it can solve its thermal issues at the hardware level, I won’t be recommending their products to anyone serious about their craft.
