Canon has officially discontinued the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III lens, according to reports from asobinet and multiple retailers confirmed by Canon Rumors on May 22, 2026. While the lens may still be found new in box through remaining retail and warehouse inventory, Canon has ceased production. This marks the end of an era for one of the most widely used telephoto zooms in the Canon EF lineup.

The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III was a key part of Canon’s professional lens ecosystem, valued for its constant f/2.8 aperture, image stabilization, and ultrasonic motor. It served photographers across sports, wildlife, portrait, and event genres, maintaining compatibility with Canon’s DSLR bodies via the EF mount. Its discontinuation reflects Canon’s ongoing shift toward RF-mount lenses for its mirrorless systems.

Although no longer in production, the lens remains accessible through existing stock, offering creators a final opportunity to acquire a proven workhorse. Its legacy continues within the broader Canon EF ecosystem, which includes a range of L-series optics still supported for use with EF and EF-S cameras, as well as RF bodies via adapters.

The move underscores Canon’s strategic focus on advancing its RF lens lineup while phasing out older EF models. For creators invested in EF glass, the discontinuation serves as a reminder to monitor inventory levels and consider long-term compatibility with evolving camera systems.

As of the announcement date, Canon has not released a direct RF-mount replacement for this specific focal range and aperture, leaving a gap that third-party manufacturers or future RF developments may address. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III remains a notable chapter in Canon’s lens history.
