Sigma FP II Targets Sony FX5 With Lower Price, November Launch

0

Sigma is positioning its upcoming FP II as a direct competitor to the Sony FX5, aiming to offer similar professional video capabilities at approximately half the cost. According to reports from Sony Alpha Rumors, the Sigma FP II is expected to be announced in November 2026, coinciding with the anticipated release of the Sony FX5 around November 16. The FP II will feature a 24MP sensor, though it remains unconfirmed whether this is the same sensor used in the current Sigma FP L. The camera will retain the L-mount system, ensuring compatibility with Sigma’s growing lineup of lenses.

A key highlight of the FP II is its open gate recording capability, which allows for full-sensor utilization across various aspect ratios — a feature valued by creators for flexible framing in post-production. The camera will also support internal RAW recording, a significant advantage for professional workflows that demand high image quality and color grading latitude. While the base model may not include an electronic viewfinder, Sigma has confirmed an optional EVF will be available, addressing a common request from videographers who rely on eye-level composition in bright conditions.

By targeting a price point roughly half that of the Sony FX5, Sigma aims to attract independent creators, documentary shooters, and hybrid photographers who want cinema-grade features without the premium cost. The FP II’s compact, modular design — a hallmark of the FP series — combined with advanced video specs, positions it as a disruptive option in the mirrorless cinema camera segment. As the November announcement approaches, creators will be watching closely to see how Sigma balances affordability with performance in this highly anticipated release.
