Sony has finally responded to persistent creator feedback by adding Open Gate recording to its FX5 compact cinema camera. For years, filmmakers and content creators have urged Sony to include this feature, which allows full-sensor readout for greater flexibility in post-production framing and aspect ratio conversion. Sony representatives had previously stated they did not believe Open Gate was a necessary feature for users.

The addition marks a notable shift in Sony’s approach to creator-driven innovation within its Cinema Line. Open Gate enables capturing the entire sensor area, providing more creative control when reframing shots or delivering content across multiple platforms with different aspect ratios. This is particularly valuable for indie filmmakers, YouTubers, and hybrid shooters who rely on compact cinema cameras for versatile production workflows.

While the FX5 remains known for its professional-grade autofocus system and advanced sensor technology—hallmarks of Sony’s imaging lineup—the Open Gate update enhances its appeal as a all-in-one tool for modern creators. The feature aligns the FX5 more closely with competing models like the Panasonic Lumix S9, which has offered Open Gate for some time.

This update reflects Sony’s growing responsiveness to user feedback in the competitive compact cinema market. By addressing a long-requested capability, Sony strengthens the FX5’s position among creators who demand both performance and flexibility in a portable form factor. No further technical specifications or pricing details were disclosed in the announcement.
