On November 6, 2026, Square Enix issued a public apology after a recent update to Nier Automata caused the game’s file size to balloon from approximately 50GB to an unprecedented 366GB, leaving many players unable to install or launch the title due to insufficient storage. The sudden spike has disrupted gameplay for users across PC and console platforms, prompting widespread confusion and frustration within the gaming community.

Square Enix confirmed it is actively investigating the root cause of the inflation, stating that the update was not intended to alter the game’s storage footprint so dramatically. While no official explanation has yet been provided for how the increase occurred, the company emphasized its commitment to resolving the issue promptly and minimizing disruption for affected players.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges developers face with post-launch updates, particularly when unintended data bloat affects user accessibility. For content creators, this event underscores the importance of monitoring patch notes and storage requirements when producing gameplay footage, tutorials, or modding guides, as sudden file size changes can impact recording setups and asset management.

As of now, Square Enix advises players to avoid installing the problematic update until a fix is deployed. The company promises to share further details once its investigation concludes, reinforcing its dedication to transparency and player experience. Creators are encouraged to follow official channels for updates to ensure accurate reporting and continued audience trust.
