YouTube star Alan Melikdjanian, the creator behind the Captain Disillusion channel, has signed a first-look deal with indie streaming service Nebula, Variety reported in April 2026. The deal also brings Melikdjanian’s existing back catalog to the platform, re-encoded at the highest quality after years of YouTube recompression degraded the originals.

The first-look structure gives Nebula Studios, the production arm of the creator-built company, the opportunity to develop premium long-form ideas with Melikdjanian. One of the first projects in development is a scripted sci-fi series. With more than 2.5 million subscribers and 278 million channel views over nearly 20 years, Melikdjanian is known for expressive visual effects work and debunking videos, and he told Variety the deal is a chance to pursue the ambitious ideas solo creators usually file under impossible.

The deal fits Nebula’s expansion from a bundle add-on into an originals business. The service, founded in 2019, has been building a lineup of first-run shows from popular YouTube creators, including Jet Lag: The Game and a series from Tom Scott, alongside its library of exclusive and early-release creator content. Nebula pays creators based on watch time, which directs subscription revenue to the channels viewers actually watch rather than pooling it opaquely.

For creators, the takeaway is that the long-form indie market is actively buying. A first-look deal lets a YouTuber develop ambitious projects with funding and distribution while keeping the channel independent, a middle path between pure DIY and signing with a traditional studio. Creators with a distinctive format and a deep catalog should watch which platforms are commissioning, because the buyers are other creators’ companies.
