TikTok is overhauling its comment section with four new features designed to turn replies into a richer part of the viewing experience: voice comments, comment polls, photo carousel comments and Live Photo comments. The company announced the additions in a September 3, 2026 newsroom post, positioning comments as a place where audiences create rather than simply react.

Voice comments are the most substantial of the four. Viewers can tap a microphone icon inside the comment box and record an audio reply of up to 60 seconds, which other users can tap to play directly in the thread. The feature is limited to accounts belonging to users aged 18 and older and is rolling out globally over the month following the announcement, so availability varies by account.

Comment polls give creators a built-in way to survey their audience without leaving the thread. A creator commenting on their own video can tap the poll icon, write up to five answer options and set how long voting stays open. The feature is live globally now. The photo options come in two flavors: Live Photo comments let users upload a motion-burst Live Photo straight from the camera roll and are available globally, while photo carousel comments allow up to nine static images in a single comment and are still rolling out.

The investment reflects the sheer scale of conversation on the platform. TikTok reports more than 1.7 billion comments are posted every day, and the new formats borrow mechanics long familiar from messaging apps — voice notes, polls, multi-photo replies — and plant them directly under videos where discovery happens.

For creators, the practical implication is straightforward: comments are becoming a second stage. A voice reply from a creator can carry more warmth than text, a poll on your own video can settle content decisions with real audience data, and photo replies give fans a way to participate visually. Early adopters who seed these formats in their comment sections may see longer dwell time on their videos, a signal recommendation systems tend to reward. The takeaway: treat the comment box as content, not an afterthought — ask a question worth answering out loud.
