Netflix Hires an Apple Podcasts Veteran to Run Its Podcast Deals

Netflix is putting a podcast person in charge of its podcasts. The streamer has hired Steve Wilson, who spent 15 years at Apple working on Apple Podcasts, to lead podcast content acquisition. Bloomberg first reported the hire on October 26, Netflix confirmed it, and Wilson starts on a contract basis, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

The hire matters because of who Wilson is in this industry. At Apple he worked across editorial, partner relations and marketing for Apple Podcasts, and Variety reports that he most recently headed marketing for the platform before he left in December 2020. In plain terms, he spent a decade and a half on the team that decided how podcasts got surfaced, promoted and partnered with on the biggest podcast app in the world.

He did not leave audio after Apple. Wilson spent nearly six years as chief strategy officer at QCode, the scripted audio studio, overseeing partnerships, marketing, distribution and content strategy, and then held the same role at Daylight Media, a podcast and creator content company. Deadline notes the line Wilson gave when he joined QCode, that podcasting empowers individuals to share their voice with the world. He now gets to test that idea from the buying side of the largest paid streaming service.

A catalog built fast, now with a dedicated buyer

Wilson inherits a catalog that Netflix assembled quickly. Variety reported in September that the service already offers more than 60 video podcasts. The foundation came from licensing deals, starting with Spotify Studios and The Ringer, which brought shows including The Bill Simmons Podcast, The Zach Lowe Show, The Rewatchables and Conspiracy Theories onto Netflix. An expanded iHeartMedia partnership added new podcasts from Martha Stewart, Kate Hudson and her brother Oliver Hudson, and Lele Pons, according to Deadline. Barstool Sports shows and Charlamagne Tha God’s The Breakfast Club, which began streaming on Netflix in May, are also in the mix.

Netflix is producing its own entries too. Its original video podcast lineup includes the true crime show Murder With My Husband, The Pete Davidson Show, the pop culture interview show Shut Up Evan, The Puzzle Room With David Kwong, and Allegedly, a true crime podcast from NBC News correspondent Ellison Barber. The Hollywood Reporter adds that the streamer has signed creators including Jay Shetty, and that its podcast deals require exclusivity on the platform.

Podcasts get investment while Netflix cuts elsewhere

The timing is the loudest part of this story. Wilson arrives about two weeks after Netflix announced layoffs of about 6 percent of its staff, roughly 1,000 jobs, its largest reduction to date, alongside a shakeup that removed chief content officer Bela Bajaria and film chief Dan Lin and installed veteran executive Peter Rice at the top of content. A company cutting product, technology, legal and HR roles while contracting a specialist to buy more podcasts is telling creators exactly where podcasts sit in its priorities.

The open question is whether audiences are showing up at the scale Netflix wants. The company has not released viewing figures for its podcasts. Awful Announcing, in an October 28 follow up, cited reporting from Puck’s Matthew Belloni that no Netflix video podcast had yet charted on Nielsen’s weekly top 10 and that internal engagement numbers were described as low. The same piece pointed the other way as well, to Edison Podcast Metrics data for the first quarter of 2026 showing that 14 percent of weekly podcast consumers had used Netflix to listen to podcasts. Both things can be true at once: a real audience exists, and it is not yet a hit driven one.

What this means for podcasters and audio creators

First, the buyer now speaks the language. An acquisitions chief who comes from Apple Podcasts, a scripted studio and a creator focused podcast company is different from a television executive treating podcasts as cheap filler. Pitches will still need a video version, because Netflix is a screen, but the person judging them knows audio economics, back catalogs and how shows actually grow.

Second, exclusivity is the price of the Netflix door, and creators should price it honestly. A Netflix deal can put a show in front of subscribers who would never open a podcast app, which is the daytime viewing audience The Hollywood Reporter says Netflix wants. It also means giving up the open distribution that built most podcasts. Wilson’s own background, built on open podcasting at Apple, will be tested against a walled garden strategy.

Third, the door is wider than celebrity talk. The existing slate leans on sports, comedy and true crime, and Wilson’s QCode years were in scripted fiction, a genre Netflix has barely touched in audio form. Nothing in the reporting promises a fiction push, but networks and independent studios with strong libraries now have a named, reachable buyer whose whole career is this medium. For an industry used to wondering whether Netflix was serious about podcasts, hiring a specialist to run acquisitions, during a layoff round, is the clearest answer yet.
