HeyGen shipped a busy September for its AI avatar platform, releasing an open-source real-time avatar stack, a benchmark for measuring AI video quality built with Kaggle, and Professional Voice Clone access through its API. The trio shows the company pushing on openness, measurement and voice fidelity at the same time.
The open-source release pairs a HeyGen LiveAvatar with OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1 model under an MIT license, shipping with three working demos. For developers and technically inclined creators, it is a starting point for building conversational avatar experiences without starting from a blank page. The Code2Video Benchmark, built with Kaggle, scores models on 168 briefs drawn from real launch videos, with an automated judge that agreed with human raters 82 percent of the time. Notably, the top four models landed within 12 Elo points of each other, and every one of them lost to the human-made reference, a useful reality check on how far generated video still has to go.
Professional Voice Clone arriving in the API lets teams train a voice from at least 20 minutes of a single speaker’s recordings and generate audio on demand, with retraining keeping the same voice ID. That stability matters for series work where a voice must stay consistent across episodes and re-renders.
Separately, HeyGen packaged its generator into 15 real estate ad templates in early September, promising a path from listing photos to narrated spot in a day, built around a 15-second digital twin capture and single-script exports to vertical, square and widescreen. It is a concrete example of the template strategy: vertical-specific, high-frequency ad formats where speed matters more than cinematic polish.
For creators, the practical read is that avatar video is splitting into two tracks. The open-source stack and benchmark serve builders who want control and measurement, while the template packs serve creators who want finished ads fast. Pick your track deliberately: if you are selling avatar services to clients, learn the API and the voice cloning workflow; if you are running your own offers, test whether a template-built avatar spot converts before investing in custom avatar production.
