YouTube Live Adds Dual-Format Streaming, Expanded Gifts and Ad-Free Moments

YouTube Live shipped its largest creator-facing update in years in 2026, built around four features: dual-format streaming, expanded gifts, ad-free moments for supporters, and smarter live ad timing.

Dual-format streaming sends one live broadcast in both horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 aspect ratios under a single URL with a unified chat, doubling reach without doubling production. The feature reached third-party encoder users in August 2026 via RTMP with a second stream key, configured through the Live Control Room in desktop Studio. There are trade-offs to know: the vertical feed is the only format discoverable in the Shorts feed, but it lacks clickable links in chat, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, 4K broadcast on the YouTube app, Premieres and live redirect.

Gifts now work on horizontal streams, not just vertical ones, and have expanded to Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Ad-free moments automatically reward Super Chat and gift senders with a personal ad-free window right after they pay, giving tippers an immediate perk. Smarter live ad timing detects peak chat activity and delays ad breaks past the most engaging moments, protecting retention at the points viewers care about most.

YouTube also added a Practice Mode for vertical livestreams in the mobile app, letting creators rehearse privately with chat, polls, stickers and green screen before going live, then go live directly from the practice session. The takeaway for streamers is to enable dual-format for the next broadcast, brief moderators on the vertical feed’s limitations, and treat ad-free moments as a selling point when asking viewers to support the stream.
