YouTube Shorts Now Surface in Search and Home Feeds

Since January 2026, YouTube Shorts appear in search results and the Home feed, not just the swipe feed. The change quietly rewrote the rules for short-form packaging: a Short can now be discovered by someone typing a query or browsing Home who has never opened the Shorts tab, which means it needs the metadata discipline long-form creators have practiced for years.

The practical requirements are specific. The primary keyword belongs in the first five words of the title. The first 150 characters of the description should carry the keyword plus the direct outcome the viewer gets. Strong metadata is what gets a Short into search and onto Home for strangers; without it, the Short is confined to the swipe feed lottery.

The expanded surfaces pair with new creative tools. YouTube’s Reimagine feature, powered by Veo, lets viewers turn a frame from a Short into an 8-second AI continuation that links back to the original, giving visually distinctive Shorts a secondary distribution path through remixes. Gemini Omni arrived in Shorts and the YouTube Create app for AI-assisted remixing of eligible Shorts, with attribution links to originals and per-video opt-outs.

The takeaway is to stop treating Shorts as throwaway vertical cuts. Give each Short a searchable title, a real description and a clear payoff, then watch search and Home traffic sources in Analytics to see which topics pull strangers. The Shorts that win in 2026 are the ones packaged like videos that happen to be short.
