YouTube’s Custom Feeds and Ask YouTube: New Discovery Surfaces for Creators

YouTube announced two new viewer surfaces at its Made on YouTube event on September 23, 2026, and both change how creators get discovered. Custom Feeds, rolling out to US users on web, mobile and TV, let viewers save homepage tabs tailored to interests such as documentaries or DIY videos. Ask YouTube, the Gemini-powered conversational feature, is adding shopping queries and follow-up questions, including product-comparison tables and voice commands for TV users.

Custom Feeds reward channels with a clear, consistent niche. A viewer who saves a documentary tab is building a personalized channel lineup, and the creators who appear in it are the ones whose catalogs read as coherent at a glance. Mixed-bag channels with no throughline are harder to place in an interest tab, which makes positioning a discoverability asset rather than just branding.

Ask YouTube’s shopping expansion turns product content into answer inventory. When a viewer asks for a comparison, the system assembles product-comparison tables from creator videos, which means review channels with structured, spec-driven content become citable sources. Voice commands on TV extend the same behavior to the living room, where comparison shopping happens on the biggest screen.

The takeaway is to audit the channel the way these systems see it. Would a stranger describe the niche in three words? Do review videos state specs and verdicts explicitly enough for a comparison table? Channels that answer yes to both are positioned for the new surfaces; channels that do not should tighten the format before the feeds fill without them.
