Ex-American Idol Contestant Caleb Flynn Arrested in Wife’s Murder; Bond Set at $2M

TIPP CITY, Ohio — Three days after his wife was found shot dead in their bed, former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn was arrested Thursday and charged with her murder.

Flynn, 40, was taken into custody around 5 p.m. — 82 hours after the killing — and booked into the Miami County Jail on charges including one count of murder, two counts of felonious assault and two counts of tampering with evidence, according to jail records and a criminal complaint. The complaint alleges he used a 9mm handgun in the killing while the couple’s two young daughters slept in the home.

The arrest followed Flynn’s 911 call in the early hours of Monday, in which he reported that an intruder had broken into the family’s Cunningham Court home and shot his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn, a substitute teacher and middle school volleyball coach. Investigators determined the crime scene had been staged, police said.

Among the findings cited in court documents: two spent shell casings recovered at the bed, and a refrigerator blocking a side door of the home.

Flynn appeared by video from the Miami County Jail for arraignment Friday morning in Miami County Municipal Court, where he pleaded not guilty before Judge Samuel Huffman.

Asked if he had anything to say about his bond, Flynn looked into the camera and said: “I just want to take care of my daughters. I’m not a risk.”

Judge Huffman set bond at $2 million, with conditions including house arrest and electronic monitoring if posted, and ordered Flynn to have no contact with his daughters. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 26.

In an interview with a Tipp City police detective and a Miami County deputy on the day of his arrest, Flynn denied killing his wife. Asked point-blank, “Did you do this? Because I have to ask you,” Flynn responded: “No.”

Flynn’s attorney, Patrick Mulligan, criticized what he called the “short timeline and seeming rush to judgment,” warning of the risks of wrongful convictions in spousal cases.

Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins rejected that framing. “The investigation has not moved fast,” he said. “Rather, it has progressed at a pace dictated by a thorough and deliberate investigative process.” The investigation involved the FBI, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Miami County Sheriff’s Office and the county prosecutor’s office.

A grand jury will next consider whether to indict Flynn on additional charges. He remains held in the Miami County Jail.
