Tipp City Music Pastor’s Wife Shot Dead in Bed; Husband Blames Intruder

TIPP CITY, Ohio — A 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach was found shot dead in her bed in the early hours of Monday, and her husband — a former “American Idol” contestant and church music pastor — told police an intruder killed her.

Tipp City police responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:30 a.m. from a home on Cunningham Court. On the call, Caleb Flynn, 40, reported that someone had broken into the home and shot his wife, Ashley Flynn. “There’s blood everywhere, oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” he told the dispatcher. He said she had been shot multiple times in the head and that he did not know whether the intruder was still in the house.

Officers arrived to find Ashley Flynn deceased in the couple’s bed. The couple’s two young daughters were inside the home at the time and were unharmed. Ashley’s mother arrived in the early morning hours to take the children.

Flynn told officers he had been lying in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard a gunshot. He said he then noticed the garage side door flung open and discovered his wife dead in the bed. Speaking with an investigator later in the day, Flynn said he and his wife had no marital problems “whatsoever.” He agreed to speak voluntarily with detectives at the police station Monday morning.

Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins confirmed Ashley died of a gunshot wound. He described the killing as “a targeted incident” and said there was no indication of an ongoing threat to the broader community. The department described the case as complex and said the investigation was proceeding with assistance from outside agencies.

Caleb Flynn was a contestant on Season 12 of “American Idol” in 2013. He performed “Lean On Me” for judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, earned a Golden Ticket to Hollywood Week, and spoke on the show about how his wife had encouraged him to chase his musical dreams. He did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood.

In the years since, Flynn became a fixture of the Tipp City faith community, serving as a music pastor and worship leader at Christian Life Center in Butler Township. Ashley Flynn worked as a substitute teacher, coached seventh-grade girls volleyball at Tippecanoe Middle School and taught at a local Bible-based academy. The couple were well known in the community.

By Monday evening, police had announced no arrests and had not named a suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
