TROY, Ohio — Former “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the February murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, closing a case that stunned their Tipp City community.

Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt imposed the sentence Monday afternoon, adding consecutive years on Flynn’s firearm and tampering with evidence charges to be served before the life term begins.

Flynn, 40, was convicted September 29 on nine counts — aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence — after an eight-day trial. Prosecutors argued he shot his 37-year-old wife twice in the back of the head as she slept on February 16, then staged the scene to look like a home invasion so he could start a new life with his mistress.

Before the sentence was announced, Flynn wept as he addressed a full courtroom. He said he loved his daughters, his parents and his brother, and apologized to his ex-wife’s family and his church community.

“I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed in those vows,” he said. “I loved her and love her. She is — was my wife. She is beautiful and amazing in countless ways.”

He said he was most ashamed of the things he said about his ex-wife — but insisted he did not kill her. “As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” Flynn said. “I will continue to fight for my innocence.”

The court then heard statements from Ashley Flynn’s family. Flynn’s brother-in-law read statements from Flynn’s two daughters.

“Dear daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing? I looked up to you. I loved you with all my heart. And then you lied to everyone. Mommy was a perfect person. The absolute perfect person,” read one daughter’s statement. “You chose to kill the only mother I ever had.”

Judge Pratt said she was deeply disturbed that Flynn used his faith to hide his “deceit” and “lust,” citing the “layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty” exposed during the trial. “You pose the highest risk to the public,” she said before imposing the sentence. Flynn’s attorney has said the defense expects to appeal.
